Stuff We Like: Fun Ways to Stay Hydrated
Is your child drinking enough water? Especially in this hot, hot summer weather we’ve been having, staying hydrated is key. Because infants and young children are more likely to become dehydrated than older kids (more on that here), make a habit of keeping water handy on family outings, whether you’re doing something physical like hiking or berry picking, basking in the sun on the beach, or just enjoying the AC in a kid-friendly museum.
While water often gets a bum rap with kids (compared with juice and soda), the American Academy of Pediatrics encourages parents to make it readily available, especially when it’s hot outside and/or your child is doing a lot of running around. Here, we’ve rounded up four products that make H2O more fun.
We know it’s bad for the environment (not to mention our budgets), so why do we always end up buying bottled water in a pinch? Invest in a few water bottles and put them into rotation so a clean one is always handy. One that’s worthwhile is this Brita Bottle for Kids, a 13 oz. BPA-free squeezable bottle with a built-in filter—making water fountain fill-ups that much better. This convenient bottle comes in three bright styles: pink butterflies, navy blue sports, and green squares (pictured). The filter should be switched out every two months. ($8.99; $7.99 for replacement filter; brita.com).
Have you ever thought, wow, I’d really like a reusable, foldable, attachable, washable, freezable bottle? Me either—but I know a great idea when I see it! Say hello to the Vapur Anti-Bottle: It stands at .5L when full, and it can be rolled, folded, flattened, or just plain squished when empty, so it stashes easily. Made in the USA, the Vapur has some cute personal touches like a carabiner clip (comes with the bottle) and a space on the back where you can write your child’s name. With several styles and an array of colors to choose from, you’re sure to find an (anti) bottle that’s right for every member of your family. ($9.99; vapur.us).
Go ahead and splurge on the PURE Glass Explorer, a durable bottle that was clearly made with parenthood in mind. The chic container is 100% glass, guaranteeing that it will never corrode or get that weird metallic taste, and it’s impact and shatter resistant, too. The wide mouth opening is perfect for popping in ice cubes, lemon wedges, or tea bags. Oh, and the bottle is dishwasher safe, too—as if we’d suggest anything to a busy parent that can’t be stuck in the dishwasher. ($19.95; pureglassbottle.com).
You won’t want to lose your cool new bottles at the playground, so avoid confusion with personalized Original Orbit Labels, sold in packs of four ($12.95; inchbug.com) and completely customizable (choose the color, icon, and up to two lines of text online). Nontoxic and virtually indestructible, these snug-fitting labels were invented by a mom with a desire to make life simpler. Perfect for camp, day care, school, or siblings who have a tough time sharing, these labels are non-adhesive, reusable, dishwasher and microwave safe—and names are imprinted clearly but discreetly so strangers cannot read them from a distance.
